Glossary: Intel® Ethernet iSCSI Boot User Guide

This Glossary defines terms, abbreviations, and acronyms that apply directly to the Intel® iSCSI Boot.

TERMS

DEFINITIONS

BIOS

Basic Input/Output System. The program a personal computer's microprocessor uses to get the computer

system started after you turn it on.

CHAP

Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) is the standard authentication protocol used on

iSCSI SAN networks.

CLP

Command Line Protocol.

DHCP

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. An industry standard internet protocol defined by the IETF. DHCP

was defined to dynamically provide communications-related configuration values such as network

addresses to network client computers at boot time. DHCP is specified by IETF RFCs 1534, 2131, and

2132.

Firmware, Flash

ROM or Option

ROM

The non-volatile memory embedded in Intel® Network Connections. Flash ROM is used to store Intel®

iSCSI Boot.

Throughout this user guide, firmware is synonymous with Flash ROM and Option ROM.

iBFT

The iSCSI Boot Firmware Table (iBFT) is a block of information that contains various parameters useful to

the iSCSI Boot process. The iBFT is the mechanism used to convey iSCSI Boot Firmware (iBF) parameter

values to the operating system. The iBF builds and fills in the iBFT. The iBFT is available to the Windows

operating system to enable a consistent flow of the boot process.

iSCSI initiator

The client side system in an iSCSI SAN configuration. The iSCSI initiator logs into the iSCSI target

system to access iSCSI target drives.

iSCSI target

The server-side system in an iSCSI SAN configuration. The iSCSI target system hosts the iSCSI target

drives which are accessed by an iSCSI initiator.

SAN

Storage Area Network.

LUN

Logical Unit Number. A LUN ID specifies a specific SCSI disk volume managed by a SCSI controller.

MPIO

Microsoft Multipath I/O.

PnP

Plug and Play. PnP refers to a set of industry standard specifications that allows installed devices to self-

configure.
