Chapter 3
User Operation

This chapter describes the hardware features and functions of the CLIM.

3.1

CLIM Functions

The CLIMs include all functions for media conversion and extension to a remote site. Each CLIM
requires a host for power. The CLIM can function as a non-managed, standalone unit within a larger
system or as a managed unit in a chassis with other application modules.

A BAM holds two CLIMs and is required in the UCS 1000 and 1001 chassis. On the BAM, the STA
LED lights green if either CLIM is operating normally. If both CLIMs are in error conditions, the
LED lights amber.

In the UCS 1001, the alarm outputs are forwarded to the alarm terminal block at the rear of the
chassis.

In the UCS 1000 and 1002, all the traps, alarm outputs, and alarm inputs are forwarded to the DMM
and the CIM in the chassis for management.

3.2

Power Up

During the power-up sequence, all LEDs light amber. When the start-up is complete, the setup and
installation are correct, and data is transmitting normally across the link, the STA LED lights green
and the LNK/Rx and Tx LEDs for both ports light green or blink green when they transmit or receive
data. See Figure 1.

3.3

CLIM Front Panel Functions

During normal operation, the LED colors change according to system and port conditions. The STA
LED shows the module condition. The LNK/Rx and Tx LEDs show the conditions on the User and
Extension Ports.

The Normal/X-over switch accommodates Ethernet input from straight-through or cross-over UTP
cables. For a straight-through cable, set the switch to "N" (in). For a cross-over cable, set the switch
to "X" (out).

The STA LED indicates the operational status of the CLIM. It does not indicate the status of the
Ethernet signal. Table 2 shows the STA LED states for various conditions.
