6. TROUBLE-SHOOTING

Problem

Possible Cause

A. Unit will not turn on

The AC power is not
connected to unit
AC line fuse is blown.
May be due to incorrect
AC line voltage setting.

B. Unit turns on but will

Timer is set to zero time,

not start (timing)

or incorrectly to seconds

or low decimal unit.

C. Battery voltage

Voltage sensing lead(s)

reading erratic or

at battery connector

not reading

loose or broken

D. Discharge test will

Battery is not sufficiently

not start

charged to start the test
Timer is set to zero time,
or incorrectly to seconds
or low decimal unit.
Cutoff voltage set higher
than the actual battery
voltage
The lead-acid battery is
sulfated and will not
support a load

E. Battery sufficiently

High resistance or open

charged but

circuit in DC cable at

discharge test fails

Elcon connector, in the

immediately as

cable itself, or in the

discharge current is

voltage sensing leads

increased

attached to connector
The lead-acid battery is
sulfated

The nickel-cadmium
battery inter-cell
connectors are loose or
contaminated causing
high resistance

Corrective Action

Check AC line with voltmeter

Ensure correct AC line voltage
setting on back of unit. (see
section 2.1)

Replace AC line fuse located
on the lower right hand side on
the rear of the unit (see
section 5.6)
Increase the timer setting (see
section 4.4)

Replace or secure leads with
both AC voltage and battery
disconnected (see section 5.6)
Recharge battery before
retrying discharge test
Increase the timer setting (see
section 4.4)

Reset the cutoff voltage to a
lower voltage (see section 4.6)
or recharge battery.
Recondition or reject the
battery

Inspect and measure
resistance in DC cable and
connector. If high or
intermittent high resistance,
the cable needs to be replaced

Check all terminals. Set a low
discharge current and look for
arcing or heat generation.
Check all terminals and inter-
cell connectors. Set a low
discharge current and look for
arcing or heat generation.
