2.1 Intended Use

The Sunny Boy is a PV inverter which converts the direct current of the PV array to alternating current
and feeds it into the power distribution grid.

Figure 1: Principle of a PV plant with Sunny Boy

The Sunny Boy takes current from a DC source and converts it to alternating current for the power
distribution grid. This current is first supplied to the local loads (E). The surplus energy is fed into the
power distribution grid (G). The amount of current required from the power distribution grid is reduced
by the current supplied directly to the local loads. An energy surplus may even result in the energy
meter (F) of your plant running backwards. This power may also be recorded as power credits by the
electric utility company depending on the interconnection agreement.
The Sunny Boy is suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
The PV modules used must be suitable for use with the Sunny Boy and must be approved by the
module manufacturer. Do not connect any energy sources other than PV modules to the Sunny Boy.
