Safety Inspection

Maintenance Inspection

BEFORE OPERATION

Look around the outboard motor
for signs of oil or gasoline leaks.

Check that all fasteners are in
place and securely tightened.

If you are using the portable fuel
tank (optional equipment), make
sure it is in good condition and
properly secured in the boat
(p.

).

Check that the fuel hose is
undamaged and properly
connected.

Wipe up any spills before starting
the engine.

Check the stern bracket to be sure
the outboard motor is securely
installed.

Check that all controls are
operating properly.

Replace any damaged parts.

Check that the battery fluid is
between the upper and lower levels,
and the battery leads are connected
securely.

Make sure a tool kit and the
emergency starter rope are
onboard (p.

). Replace any

missing items.

Check the fuel level in the fuel
tank (p.

).

Check the water separator for
water contamination (p.

).

Check that the anodes are securely
attached to the stern bracket and
the gear case (p.

) and are not

excessively worn. The anodes help
protect the outboard motor from
corrosion.

Check to be sure the propeller is
undamaged and the castle nut is
secured with the cotter pin
(p.

).

Check the engine oil level (p.

).

Running the engine with a low oil
level can cause engine damage.

Check the emergency stop switch
for proper operation. Start the
engine (p.
