Overview

Recent Diabetes Findings.

In 1993 the National Institutes of
Health concluded an extensive long-
term study of people with Type 1
diabetes. This study, called the
Diabetes Control and Complications
Trial (DCCT), found that by keeping
your blood glucose close to the levels
of people without diabetes you can
reduce the risk of complications
involving the eyes, kidneys, and ner-
vous system by approximately 60%.

1

What This Means for You.

Frequent blood glucose testing is
the best means you have for
keeping track of how well you are
doing with the factors that affect
your diabetes—medication, diet,
exercise, and stress management.
Blood glucose test results can also
tell you whether your diabetes is
changing in ways that might require
an adjustment to your treatment
plan. Always consult your health-
care professional before making
any adjustments.
