LUN
Logical Unit Number. A LUN is also referred to as a volume or Vdisk. See Volume.
managed storage system
A storage system that is configured in a storage utility.
managed volume
A volume that is created and managed by Storage Provisioner. You can also remove it from
Storage Provisioner management.
migrate
An unmanaged volume moved under Storage Provisioner management. It associates the volume
with a customer, service level, and other information needed for management and billing.
path
A defined connection from one host to one storage utility that specifies the set of host bus
adapters that make the connection. Paths connecting one host to different storage utilities can
specify the same host bus adapters. Multiple paths can connect one host to multiple storage
utilities.
quota
The limit placed on a storage consumer’s usage of storage and connectivity into a storage utility.
service level
Storage attributes that define the level of requirements for all storage systems within the service
level.
SAN
A storage area network that includes the fabric (switches) and storage systems. It is owned by
the storage provider.
storage administrator
The person assigned to perform storage management tasks in the storage environment owned by
the storage provisioner. The storage administrator uses Storage Provisioner for Providers to
configure storage utilities, define service levels, set up consumer accounts, grant consumers
access to utilities with defined quotas, define hosts and their paths to utilities, and run billing
reports.
storage consumer
The organization that owns hosts and the applications on the hosts, pays storage providers for
storage used, and employs one or more host administrators. Storage consumer is used
interchangeably with customer.
storage provider
The organization that owns storage systems and the SAN, hires one or more storage
administrators, and charges storage consumers for storage used.
