NOTE:

There is no quick way to convert a thin provisioned virtual disk back to a regular virtual disk. The
only way to convert back to a regular virtual disk is to migrate the data from the thin provisioned
virtual disk to the regular virtual disk.

To convert a virtual disk to a thin provisioned virtual disk:

1.

In the navigation tree, expand the Entities node.

2.

Click the Virtual Disk node. The virtual disks list appears in the list area.

3.

Right-click the virtual disk you want to convert.

4.

Select Manage > Convert to Thin Provision. The Convert to Thin Provision wizard opens to the
Enter virtual capacity screen.

5.

In the Virtual capacity field, enter a value for the capacity of the thin provisioned virtual disk.

NOTE:

The capacity set for a thin provisioned virtual disk cannot be smaller than the capacity of
the original regular virtual disk. The capacity cannot be larger than 16 TB.

6.

Click Next. A confirmation screen appears.

7.

Click Finish. The virtual disk is converted to a thin provisioned virtual disk with an allocated
capacity equal to the capacity of the original virtual disk, with the potential to expand on demand
up to the capacity you defined in

Step 5

.

Expanding virtual disks

You may need to expand a virtual disk if the host application using the virtual disk is running low on
virtual disk capacity. When you expand a virtual disk, you can allocate the additional storage capacity
from any storage pool(s) that has/have enough free capacity.

NOTE:

Because the segments come from different sources and are concatenated together, the performance
characteristics of the segments may vary. Therefore, an expansion of a virtual disk in this manner
should be viewed as a temporary measure. You should attempt to migrate the virtual disk as soon as
possible.

To expand a virtual disk:

1.

In the navigation tree, expand the Entities node.

2.

Click the Virtual Disk node. The virtual disks list appears in the list area.

3.

Right-click the virtual disk you want to expand.

4.

Select Manage > Expand. The Expand wizard opens to the Select Storage Pool(s) screen and
displays the list of available storage pools.
