Connecting an external modem

Your PowerBook has been designed to work most effectively with an internal
modem. It is possible to connect an external modem to the printer port on the
back panel of the computer, but the performance of an internal modem will
be much better than that of an external modem. External modems running
at a transmission rate of 9600 baud or higher will experience the most
performance reduction.

To connect an external modem, follow these steps:

1

Make sure the computer is asleep or shut down.

2

Connect the modem to a power source and to the phone line.

See the documentation that came with the modem for instructions.

3

Make sure the modem is turned off.

4

Connect the modem cable to the printer port.

5

Turn on the modem.

6

Wake or restart the computer.

7

Choose Chooser from thne Apple (

K

) menu and set AppleTalk to Inactive.

If your computer does not have an internal modem, the external modem is
ready to use.

If your computer does have an internal modem, continue with step 7.
