Disk drives and disks

The computer won’t start up from its hard disk, or the hard disk icon doesn’t appear on

the desktop.

m There may have been a temporary software problem. Turn off the

computer, wait at least 10 seconds, and then turn it on again.

m Make sure the hard disk is designated as the startup disk, as explained in

Chapter 2 of the Macintosh Reference book.

m There may be a problem with the system software on the hard disk. Start

up the computer with the Utilities disk. If the hard disk’s icon appears, you
need to reinstall your system software. (See Chapter 1 for instructions on
using the PowerBook 150 Restore program). Disk repair programs can
sometimes fix problems of this kind.

m The information on the disk drive may be damaged. Try using a disk repair

program (such as Disk First Aid on the Utilities disk) to repair or recover
the information.

m If using a disk repair program doesn’t work, you’ll need to reinitialize the

internal hard disk. Doing so will erase all the data on the hard disk, so
you’ll then need to restore the contents using your most recent backup
floppy disks. Follow these steps:

1. Insert the

Utilities disk into the floppy disk drive and restart the

computer.

2. Double-click the Internal HD Format icon to start the utility program.

3. Click the Initialize button.

A message appears, asking you to confirm that you really want to
reinitialize your internal hard disk.

4. Click the OK button.

A status bar shows the progress of reinitialization. A message appears to
advise you when the process is complete.

5. Click OK to quit the Internal HD Format program.

6. Use your most recent backup floppy disks to restore the contents of your

hard disk. For instructions, see “Restoring the Information on Your Hard
Disk” in Chapter 1.
