7.

Install the cam shaft by:

7a.

Pre-lube the cam shaft with clean 10W-30
motor oil or engine assembly lube.

7b.

Rotate the crankshaft until the timing mark
points to the tappets.

NOTE: A permanent marker can be used to high-

light the timing marks for assembly. Avoid
using paint pens, the dried paint can flake off
and cause wear.

7c.

Insert the cam shaft while aligning the timing
marks. See Figure 10.28.

7d.

Place the thrust washer on the crankshaft.

8.

Install the sump by:

8a.

If removed, install the governor gear and cup
by following the steps described in Chapter 4:
Fuel system and Governor.

8b.

Place a new gasket on the sump, let the align-
ment dowels hold it in place.

8c.

Rotate the governor arm so that it is perpen-
dicular to the crankcase face.

8d.

Using a seal protector, slide the sump on to
the crankshaft.

NOTE: The governor arm must slide between the

governor cup and the governor arm stop.
See Figure 10.29.

NOTE: Watch the governor arm as the sump is slid

into place. Rotate the arm as needed to
allow the arm to slip into place. See Figure
10.30.

8e.

Rock sump until it seats fully against the cylin-
der block.

8f.

Install the sump bolts and tighten to a torque
of 89 in-lbs (10 Nm).

NOTE: Use a star torque pattern to tighten the

sump bolts.

9.

Install the cylinder head by following the steps
described in Chapter 9: Cylinder head.

10.

Install the muffler by following the steps described in
Chapter 8: Exhaust.
