Section 4 — Menus Overview

External Device Menus

The External Device menus are used to control external devices, such as
tape machines (VTRs) or digital disk recorders (DDRs), with the Zodiak
Menu application and switcher E-MEMs. The external devices must be
defined and configured in the Eng Setup, Ports & Devices menu and
assigned to an E-MEM group level before they will be available for control.
Status from external devices such as device availability, and current play-
back and record position is also reported in the menus.

Five menus are available:

Enables – Enables and disables control of external devices.

Timeline Events – Used to add machine control event triggers to
E-MEM timelines.

Control – Used for direct control of external devices (similar to the
Machine Control subpanel).

Event List – Permits the creation and saving of lists of DDR clips that
can be loaded and then played in order.

Link – Permits the linking of devices so they roll in sync.

Note

All menu buttons are grayed out if external devices have not been configured.

Control of configured external devices from the Menu application includes
basic play, stop, fast forward, and rewind actions. They may also be con-
trolled through switcher E-MEM using events learned to effect keyframes.
Events act as triggers for specific behaviors, similar to GPI or Peripheral
Bus II commands. As each keyframe with an event is encountered during
an effect run, that event information is sent to the external device, com-
manding it to action.

Actions include:

Cue, play, and stop DDR clips, and

Cue, play, and stop tapes in VTRs.

Note

These menus will have all buttons grayed out if external devices have not
been configured in the Eng Setups, Ports & Devices menu.

External Device Enables Menu

The External Device Enables menu is used to selectively enable and disable
control of external devices that have been defined in the Eng Setups, Ports
& Devices menu. The External Device Enables menu (
