Single-Mode Fiber An optical waveguide (or fiber) with a small core diameter in which only a
single mode is capable of propagation. This type of fiber is particularly
suitable for wideband transmission over large distances, since its bandwidth
is limited only by chromatic dispersion.
Topology The logical and/or physical arrangement of stations on a network.
Transducer A device for converting energy from one form to another, such as optical
energy to electrical energy.
ULP Upper Level Protocol.
Waveguide Structure that guides electromagnetic waves along its length. An optical
fiber is an optical waveguide.
Wavelength The distance between two crests of an electromagnetic waveform.
