TIP:

You create and edit resource groups on virtual storage machines by using the CLI. For more information
about CLI commands, see the

HP XP7 Command View Advanced Edition CLI Reference Guide.

The following figure shows an example configuration of a virtual storage machine.

In the example configuration, the virtual storage machine is created using the model type and serial
number of the HP XP7. Resources from the resource pool of the default virtual storage machine are
added to the user-defined virtual storage machine. The resources are added to the P9500-11111-Pool
resource pool. When Resource Group B is created on the virtual storage machine, resources from the
P9500-11111-Pool are added.

Hosts can access the resources of virtual storage machines by using the virtual information. For
example, when a HP P9500 is replaced by an XP7 and the information in HP P9500 is configured
on a virtual storage machine, configuration changes are not needed. The host can view and access
the volumes on the XP7 virtual storage machine in the same way that the volumes were accessed on
the HP P9500.

Identify the target resources by verifying the correlation between the virtual information that was sent
from the host administrator and the physical information. You can name a virtual storage machine
relative to how the virtual storage machine is being used.

Data migration using virtual storage machines

For data migration using virtual storage machines, you cannot access the resources until all of the
source resource data has been migrated to the destination, even if the virtual information for these
resources is displayed.
