IMPORTANT:

The server blade must be powered off for all profile changes if there is a Flex-10

NIC in the server, and the server is connected to an HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 Modules or in

an empty bay.

If any of the above settings are changing, the server must be powered off before the profile action can

occur. If the server blade is not powered off, a message is displayed and no changes are made. In this

case, power off the server blade and repeat the action.
When server side settings are changing, operations that require server blades to be powered off include
the following:

When assigning a profile to a server blade already installed in a device bay

When deleting a profile, moving a profile to a different device bay, or un-assigning a profile from

the existing bay

When making modifications to a profile that affect settings on the server blade (e.g., PXE

enable/disable, changing the number of connections, or changing Fibre Channel boot parameters)

Changing the network connected to an already defined Ethernet port, changing the Fabric connected to a

Fibre Channel port, or changing the speed of a Fibre Channel port can be done without powering off the

server blade. In addition, if server factory defaults are used for MAC addresses and WWNs, and BIOS

Fibre Channel boot settings are used, the profile can be assigned or un-assigned without powering down
the server blade.
In some cases, server profiles can be assigned to server blades when certain mismatches between the

server profile definition and the server blade exist. The following list summarizes Virtual Connect behavior

under these circumstances:

If the number of Network connections in the profile is more than the number of physical Ethernet

ports, the profile is assigned, but a warning message appears.

If a non Virtual Connect Ethernet switch is connected to any port in the profile, the profile is
assigned, but the MAC address is not changed on the NIC. A warning message appears.

If the number of Fibre Channel connections in the profile is more than the number of physical Fibre
Channel HBA ports, the profile is assigned, but a warning message appears.

NOTE:

The BL860c server blade does not support configuration of Fibre Channel boot

parameters or PXE settings via Virtual Connect. Other Virtual Connect server profile settings

will be configured properly when using the appropriate BL860c firmware.

Serial Number (Logical) Settings

The serial number (logical) setting feature enables users to add a serial number (logical) and UUID

(logical) to server profiles. By configuring Virtual Connect to assign serial numbers (logical), a profile can

present a single serial number regardless of the physical server. With these configuration values added to
server profiles, software that is licensed to a particular server, based on one or both of these values, can
