8 Working with Remote Recovery Configurations

The Remote Recovery Configuration feature helps you to create and manage both Synchronous or
Periodic Remote Recovery Sets at the HP 3PAR Remote Copy group level.

HP 3PAR Recovery Manager for VMware software supports VMware Peer Persistent between
multiple servers through synchronized HP 3PAR Remote Copy groups.

When Virtual Volumes use Peer Persistent, RMV blocks the local Virtual Volume creation for Virtual
Machines and datastores while allowing the creation of remote Virtual Copies on Remote Recovery
Configurations. As a result, when an active path failovers to a different Storage System, the virtual
copies become available on either Storage Systems for restoration. For more information about
establishing Peer Persistent setup, see the HP 3PAR Remote Copy User Guide.

Getting started

What is Remote Recovery Configuration?

Remote Recovery Configuration is a collection of replication groups that contain Virtual Volumes
currently exposed to the ESXi hosts managed in the vCenter server. These replication groups are
called Remote Copy Groups in the HP 3PAR StoreServ. HP 3PAR Remote Copy feature provides
enterprise and cloud data centers with autonomic replication and disaster recovery technology
that allows protection and sharing of data between multiple arrays within the same site or disparate
geographical locations.

If Remote Copy Group is setup for the Virtual Volumes used by the ESXi hosts, Recovery Manager
for VMware allows you to take advantage of the Remote Copy Group by taking snapshots on local
and/or remote array using Remote Copy Group as an entity for operation.

Prior to creating Recovery Sets through Remote Recovery Configuration, ensure that the following
conditions are met:

Remote Copy group must be in Started status, and all Virtual Volumes must be in Synced
status.

To create a Recovery Set on an HP 3PAR Virtual Volume, the Volume must have Recovery Set
space allocated in the storage array during its creation.

All Virtual Machines involved in the operation cannot contain Virtual Volumes from different
Remote Copy groups.

VMware Tool

is required in a Virtual Machine to guarantee a consistent and usable backup,

when application consistency is desired.

Once created, Recovery Set allows you to mount individual virtual copy to a specific ESXi host that
resides on the local array. You can then attach the mounted volume to a selected Virtual Machine
as additional disk for a file level restore.

This is equivalent to the function in “Remote Copy Feature” in the vSphere Client display.

Remote Recovery Configuration tab

The Remote Recovery Configuration is available under Related Objects for Virtual Machines and
datastores.

Action Menu

Create Remote Recovery Set—Create a Remote Recovery Set for the selected configuration.

Set Remote Recovery Set Creation Policy—Set the default creation policy. You can over-ride
this through creation wizard.
