Choose a focus mode.

To choose an autofocus mode, rotate the focus-
mode selector to AF, and then press the AF-mode
button and rotate the main command dial until
the desired mode is displayed in the monitor.

To use manual focus, rotate the focus-mode selector to M and proceed to Step 6
after focusing as described on page 55.

Choose an AF-area mode.

To choose an AF-area mode, press the AF-mode
button and rotate the sub-command dial until
the desired mode is displayed in the monitor.

Mode

Description

AF-S

Single-servo AF

: For stationary subjects. Focus locks

when shutter-release button is pressed halfway.

AF-F

Full time-servo AF

: For moving subjects. Camera

focuses continuously until shutter-release button
is pressed. Focus locks when shutter-release
button is pressed halfway.

Face-priority AF

: The camera automatically detects

and focuses on portrait subjects facing the
camera. Use for portraits.

Wide-area AF

: Use for hand-held shots of

landscapes and other non-portrait subjects. Use
the multi selector to select the focus point.

Normal-area AF

: Use for pin-point focus on a

selected spot in the frame. A tripod is
recommended.

Subject-tracking AF

: Track a selected subject as it

moves through the frame.

chosen using Custom Setting a8 (Live view/movie
