Troubleshooting

Should you encounter a problem with
your system, find your problem in the
troubleshooting checklist below and take
the corrective action.
If the problem persists, consult your
nearest Sony dealer.

Note that if the service personnel changes
some parts during repair, these parts may
be retained.

General

The system has entered standby
mode.
• This is not a malfunction. The system

enters standby mode automatically in
about 15 minutes when there is no
operation or audio signal output (page 35).

The clock or timer setting is canceled.
• The power cord is disconnected or a power

failure occurred. Set the clock (page 16)
and timer (page 33) again.

There is no sound.
• Adjust the volume.
• Check the speaker connections (page 13).
• Check the connection of the optional

equipment, if any (page 13).

• Turn on the connected equipment.
• Unplug the power cord, then plug in the

power cord again and turn on the system.

• There is no audio output during Recording

Timer.

There is no microphone sound.
(SHAKE-99/SHAKE-77/SHAKE-55
only)
• Adjust the microphone volume.
• Make sure the microphone is connected to

the MIC jack correctly.

• Make sure the microphone is turned on.

There is severe hum or noise.
• Move the system away from sources of

noise.

• Connect the system to a different wall

outlet.

• Install a noise filter (commercially

available) to the power cord.

• Turn off surrounding electrical

equipment.

• You can hear a noise from cooling fans

when the system is in standby mode or
playback at low volume. This is not a
malfunction.

The timer does not function.
• Check the timer setting and set the correct

time (page 33).

• Cancel the Sleep Timer function

(page 33).

The remote control does not function.
• Remove the obstacles between the remote

control and the unit.

• Move the remote control closer to the unit.
• Point the remote control at the unit’s

sensor.

• Replace the batteries (R6/size AA).
• Move the unit away from the fluorescent

light.

There is acoustic feedback.
• Reduce the volume.
• (SHAKE-99/SHAKE-77/SHAKE-55

only) Move the microphone away from
the speakers or change the direction of the
microphone.

“PLEASE CONNECT ALL
SPEAKERS” appears. (SHAKE-99/
SHAKE-77/SHAKE-55 only)
• Check that all speakers are connected.

If “PROTECT EXX” (X is a number)
appears in the display panel

Immediately unplug the power cord,
and check the following items.
• Are you using only the supplied

speakers?

• Is anything blocking the ventilation

holes of the unit?

After checking the above items and
fixing any problems, plug in the power
cord again and turn on the system. If
the issue persists, consult your nearest
Sony dealer.
