Instructions
Includes a 12v DC power adapter, a SCART adapter and a 20m cable to allow you to watch and
hear garden birds on your TV as they nest and raise a family.
This system is designed to show the nest box pictures on a TV set or video monitor equipped
with AV IN. To connect this system to a computer, you will need a video capture device and
suitable software.
Connecting up your Gardman nest box camera kit
Open the roof by turning the catch on the right side of the nest box, just above the roof. This is
what you should see when the long cable is installed and the front cover on the white trunking
(down the left outside wall of the nest box) is removed.
The camera is a black and white CMOS CCTV camera. It has 6 infra-red LEDs on the front of
its case to enable it to see clearly in pitch darkness, so you can watch day and night without
disturbing the birds.
The camera is mounted on the underside of the roof by means of a stainless steel bolt. If you
ever need to remove the camera, simply unscrew the bolt and lift the camera out. Please note
that it has a little black lens cover over front of the lens to protect it. This black cover should be
removed before use – it simply pushes on and pulls off.
There is a wire with three connectors hanging out of the camera. The yellow connector carries the
nest box picture (video) back to your TV, the white connector carries the nest box sound (audio)
back to your TV and the red connector carries the low voltage power (12v DC) to the camera.
The three little wires from the camera go out through a slot in the top of the right side wall so that
the three connectors hang down inside the white trunking on the right outside of the nest box.
The trunking has a cover that clips off and on – if the cover ever becomes too loose, squeeze the
walls of the trunking outwards to improve its grip on the cover.
The kit also includes a long 20m cable, with three connectors on each end. The yellow and white
connectors are the same on both ends, but the red connectors are different – one end is a red plug
(the TV end) and the other end is a red socket (the nest box camera end). This enables the picture,
sound and power to be carried in one cable.
To connect the long cable to the camera, open the trunking on the right outside of the nest box
and simply connect the
‘long cable’ connectors
to the camera cable
connectors – yellow to
yellow, white to white and
red to red. Don’t forget –
the red power connectors
on the long cable are
different at each end, so
if one red end doesn’t fit,
the other red end will.
Indoors, at the TV end of
the cable, you can plug
the yellow and white
connectors into their
corresponding yellow and
white AV sockets on your
TV if it has them (little
round sockets, usually
on the front of the TV).
Alternatively, you can
plug the yellow and white
connectors on the long
cable into the SCART
adapter provided, and
then plug the SCART adapter into the SCART socket on your TV (as shown in the diagram).
Now connect the power. Make sure the switch is turned off at a wall socket, then plug in the 12v
DC power adapter. Plug the little black plug on the end of the power adapter into the red socket on
the end of the long cable.
When you turn on the wall socket, you should get a picture of the inside of the nest box on your
TV’s AV channel. If not, switch off the wall socket, make sure it is all connected up properly, the
TV is on and the lens cap has been taken off the camera, then turn it on again.
You can try out this whole procedure indoors to check that everything is working and acquaint
yourself with the kit, although you might get a loud howl of feedback if the volume is too high on
the TV and the camera is too near the TV. To get rid of any feedback, simply move the nest box
and camera further away from the TV and turn the volume down. When you put the nest box
outside, feedback won’t be a problem.
When you test the system indoors, you may get some fuzziness or interference on the picture
because the long cable is still coiled up. If it should happen, this problem is caused by inductance
due to the signal going round and round the circular coil of cable and it won’t happen when the
cable is laid out.
To test the picture focus, place something about 1" (25mm) thick, inside, on the floor of the nest
box. This is where the eggs and babies can be expected after a nest is built.
Please note that the camera can swivel on its bolt and tilt on its cradle, so it can point anywhere
in the nest box. The focus is adjusted by rotating the lens.
When you are happy that
everything is working, switch
the system off at the wall,
disconnect the long cable and
then you can hang the nest
box outside. You can bring the
long cable indoors through an
open window or through a hole
drilled through the wall, but the
hole should be at least 16mm
diameter but 19mm (3/4") is
better, and even then, you will
have to wrap the connectors with cling film or tape, one behind the other in single file, in order to
feed them through such a tight hole. It is best to wrap them onto a thin, stiff draw wire, so you
can poke the wire through the hole first and use it to gently draw the plugs through the hole.
Work very, very carefully when feeding cable and plugs through a hole – more systems are
damaged by pulling plugs off when feeding cables through walls than at any other time.
There are white foam bungs inside the
trunking that can be removed and replaced
when the cable is installed inside the trunking
to keep insects, etc out of the trunking (see
diagram below). There is also a small packet
of cable clips to fix the cabling to walls,
fences, etc, – the bottom hole inside the
trunking can be used to fix a cable clip over
the cable if preferred. Then refit the cover on
the trunking.
Siting the nest box
If fixing your nest box to a tree, use the
aluminium nail provided. Steel nails and
screws left in trees can shatter a chainsaw
blade if the tree is felled one day – chainsaws
can cut through aluminium nails in safety.
Site out of reach of predators and shelter
from prevailing wind, rain and strong sunlight.
Do not place adjacent to bird tables or other
feeding devices. The nest box should be tilted
down slightly at the front and be between
1.5m and 5m above the ground. It should be
placed within easy reach of the 20m length
of the cable.
Do not disturb the nest box until the fledglings have left. Clean out the nest box during late
September or early October so that it can be used as a roosting site and will be ready for the next
seasons nesting attempts.

Anleitung
Inklusive eines 12V DC Power Adapters, Scart Adapter und einem 20m Kabel um die Wildvögel in der
Brutzeit auf Ihrem Fernseher sehen und hören zu können.
Dieses System wurde entwickelt, um Bilder aus dem Nistkasten auf einem Fernsehgerät oder Monitor,
ausgestattet mit AV-In, zu zeigen. Um eine Verbindung dieses Systems mit einem Computer herzustellen,
benötigen Sie ein Video-Capture-Gerät und entsprechende Software.
Anschließen Ihres Gardman Nistkasten Kamera Systems
Öffnen Sie das Dach durch Drehen der Halterung auf der rechten Seite des Nistkastens. Dies sollten
Sie sehen, wenn das lange Kabel installiert und die Abdeckung des weißen Kabelkanals (an der linken
Außenwand des Nistkastens) entfernt ist.
Diese Kamera ist eine Schwarz-Weiß CMOS CCTV-Kamera und verfügt über 6 Infrarot-LEDs auf der
Vorderseite, damit Sie die Vögel auch bei völliger Dunkelheit scharf sehen können ohne die Vögel zu
stören.
Die Kamera ist an der Unterseite des Daches mit einer Edelstahlschraube montiert. Sollten Sie jemals
die Kamera entfernen müssen, schrauben Sie einfach die Schraube ab und heben die Kamera heraus.
Beachten Sie die Schutzabdeckung der Linse. Diese Schwarze Abdeckung muss durch Abziehen vor
dem Gebrauch der Kamera entfernt werden.
Ein Kabel mit drei Anschlüssen geht von der Kamera ab. Der gelbe Stecker überträgt die Nistkasten Bilder
(Video) und der weiße Stecker überträgt den Nistkasten Ton (Audio) an Ihr Fernsehgerät. Der rote Stecker
versorgt die Kamera mit Niederspannung (12V DC).
Die drei kleinen Drähte aus der Kamera gehen durch einen kleinen Schlitz in der Spitze der rechten
Seitenwand, so dass die drei Anschlüsse Außen in den weißen Kabelkanal auf der rechten Seite des
Nistkastens sind. Der Kabelkanal hat eine Abdeckung. Sollte diese mal zu locker sein, drücken Sie
einfach die Wände des Kabelkanals leicht nach Außen, damit die Abdeckung wieder besser sitzt.
Das Set enthält ein 20m Kabel mit drei Steckern an beiden Enden. Die gelben und weißen Stecker sind
auf beiden Seiten gleich aber die roten Stecker sind unterschiedlich. An einem Ende ist ein roter Stecker
(TV-Ende) und das andere Ende ist eine rote Buchse (Nistkasten-Kamera-Ende). Dies ermöglicht es, die
Bild-, Ton- und Stromversorgung in nur einem Kabel durchzuführen.
So schließen Sie das lange Kabel an die Kamera: öffnen Sie den Kabelkanal auf der rechten Außenseite
des Nistkastens und verbinden das Kabel mit den Steckern im Kabelkanal; gelb an gelb, weiß an weiß
und rot an rot. Vergessen Sie nicht, dass die roten Enden an dem Kabel unterschiedlich sind. Sollte eine
Seite nicht passen, passt die andere Seite.
Im Haus: Am Ende des
TV-Kabels können Sie den
gelben und weißen Stecker
in die entsprechende
gelbe und weiße AV-
Buchse stecken, sofern
an Ihrem Fernsehgerät
vorhanden. (kleine runde
Buchsen, in der Regel
auf der Vorderseite des
Fernsehgerätes.) Alternativ
können Sie den gelben und
weißen Stecker mit einem
Scart-Adapter versehen
und diesen dann in die
Scart-Buchse an Ihrem
Fernsehgerät stecken.
(Wie in der Abbildung oben
gezeigt.)
Schließen Sie nun
den Strom an. Achten
Sie darauf, dass das
Gerät an der Steckdose
ausgeschaltet ist. Stecken
Sie nun den 12V DC Stecker
in das Netzteil. Stecken Sie
den kleinen schwarzen Stecker am Ende des Netzteils in die rote Buchse am Ende des langen Kabels.
Wenn Sie nun die Steckdose wieder anschalten, sollten Sie ein Bild von der Innenseite des Nistkastens
auf Ihrem AV-Kanal an Ihrem Fernsehgerät sehen. Wenn nicht, schalten Sie die Steckdose wieder aus
und stellen Sie sicher, das alles richtig angeschlossen ist, das Fernsehgerät eingeschaltet und der
Objektivdeckel von der Kamera entfernt wurde. Dann schalten Sie die Steckdose wieder an.
Sie können versuchen sich mit dem Set im Haus vertraut zu machen und zu testen ob alles funktioniert.
Eventuell hören Sie ein lautes Geheul, was bedeuten kann, dass die Lautstärke an Ihrem Fernsehgerät zu
hoch ist und die Kamera zu nah am Fernseher steht. Stellen Sie dann einfach den Nistkasten weiter weg
vom Fernseher und drehen die Lautstärke runter. Sollte Sie den Nistkasten schon draußen angebracht
haben, sollte dies kein Problem sein.
Wenn Sie die Kamera im Haus testen, ist das Bild eventuell unscharf, weil das lange Kabel noch
aufgewickelt ist. Dieses Problem sollte nicht mehr auftreten, wenn das Kabel verlegt wurde.
Um den Bildfocus zu testen, platzieren Sie etwas ca. 1" (25mm) dickes Innen auf dem Boden des
Nistkastens. Das ist die Stelle an der die Eier und Babys nach dem Nestbau erwartet werden.
Bitte beachten Sie, dass die Kamera im Inneren des Nistkastens auf seinem Bolzen drehbar ist und
somit auf jeden Punkt im Nistkasten eingestellt werden kann. Der Fokus wird durch Drehen des Objektivs
angepasst.
Wenn alles funktioniert, entfernen
Sie das Kabel aus der Steckdose
und bringen den Nistkasten
draußen an. Sie können das
lange Kabel im Haus durch ein
geöffnetes Fenster oder durch ein
Loch in der Wand ziehen, dieses
Loch sollte aber mind. 16mm im
Durchmesser sein. 19mm (4.3")
wären noch besser und selbst
dann müssen Sie die Stecker
noch mit Folie umwickeln, um sie
besser durch das Loch ziehen zu
können. Besser ist es, das Kabel an einem dünnen, stabilen Draht zu befestigen und langsam durch das
Loch zu ziehen.
Arbeiten Sie sehr vorsichtig beim Durchziehen des Kabels durch das Loch. Zu keinem anderen Zeitpunkt
ist das Kabel leichter zu beschädigen z.B. indem ein Stecker abreißt etc.
Im Inneren des Kabelkanals sind weiße Schaumringe, die entfernt und durch neue ersetzt werden können,
um Insekten fern zu halten (siehe Bild unten).
Es gibt auch ein kleines Packet Kabel-Clips zur
Befestigung des Kabels an Mauern, Zäunen
usw. - das Loch im Inneren des Kabelkanals
kann für die Befestigung des Kabels durch einen
Kabel-Clip genutzt werden. Befestigen Sie nun die
Abdeckung wieder auf dem Kabelkanal.
Standortwahl für den Nistkasten
Wenn Sie den Nistkasten an einem Baum
anbringen, nutzen Sie bitte Aluminumnägel,
weil Stahlnägel und Schrauben die Klingen von
Kettensägen zerbrechen können.
Befestigen Sie den Nistkasten außerhalb der
Reichweite von Räubern und geschützt vor Wind,
Regen und zu starker Sonneneinstrahlung. Nicht
neben Futterstellen aufhängen. Der Nistkasten
sollte an der Vorderseite leicht nach unten kippen
und zwischen 1,5m und 5m über dem Boden
angebracht werden.
Er sollte in der Reichweite des 20m Kabels
angebracht werden.
Bitte gehen Sie nicht an den Nistkasten, bis die
Jungvögel diesen verlassen haben. Reinigen Sie
den Nistkasten Ende September / Anfang Oktober,
so dass dieser als Schlafplatz genutzt werden
kann und für die nächste Nistsaison bereit ist.
Garantie
Kamera und Zubehör, sowie defekte Bauteile werden 12 Monate ersetzt, sofern das System anhand dieser Anweisung angebracht und genutzt wurde und keine Teile von anderen Herstellern (Kameras, Netzteile usw.)
angebracht wurden. Schäden die durch Änderungen durch den Benutzer entstanden sind oder eine geöffnete Kamera sind nicht durch die Garantie abgedeckt.
