Hibernate Mode

Hibernate mode copies all system data to the hard drive, and then turns off the computer. When you resume computer operation, the application
programs and files that were open before you activated hibernate mode are still open.

NOTICE: You cannot remove devices or undock your computer while in hibernate mode.

Your computer enters hibernate mode if the battery charge level becomes critically low, or if the power button, the <Fn><Esc> power conservation
key combination (sleep button), or the display are programmed to activate hibernate mode in the

Power Options Properties

window.

To resume computer operation from hibernate mode, press the power button. The computer may take a short time to return to its normal operating
state.

Place the computer in hibernate mode if you intend to store the computer for extended periods of time. Hibernate mode preserves the
configuration information stored in NVRAM.

Suspend Mode

Suspend mode turns off the microprocessor clock, display, hard drive, mass-storage devices such as the CD drive module, external monitor
connector, external keyboard (if attached), parallel port, serial port, touch pad, and diskette drive.

When your computer is in suspend mode, the power light is not on.

To activate suspend mode, see "

Activating Suspend Mode

."

Suspend-to-Disk Mode

S2D mode copies all system data to a reserved area on the hard drive (the S2D partition) and then turns off all power to the computer. When you
resume operation, the desktop is restored to the same state that it was in before the computer entered S2D mode. If the computer is about to run
out of battery power, S2D mode helps preserve system data by saving it to the hard drive.

Place the computer in S2D mode if you intend to store it for extended periods of time. S2D mode preserves the configuration information in
nonvolatile random-access memory (NVRAM). The reserve battery maintains the configuration information, but it may run out of energy after 40
days.

Some PC Cards may not operate correctly after resuming from S2D mode. If you encounter problems with a card, remove and reinstall the card.

To activate S2D mode, see "

Activating Suspend-to-Disk Mode

."

Power Options Properties

The Power Options Properties window (in Windows 2000 and Windows Me) allows you to program your computer to enter standby or hibernate
mode whenever you press the power button, press the <Fn><Esc> power conservation key combination (sleep button), or close the display.

1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and click Control Panel. (If you are running Windows 2000, double-click Control Panel.)

2. Double-click the Power Options Properties icon.

NOTE: Some PC Cards may not operate correctly after resuming from standby mode. If you encounter problems
with a card,

remove and reinsert the card

.

NOTE: If a password is set, the system displays a password prompt. If you do not enter a password within 2 minutes, the system returns
to suspend mode.

NOTE: Dell creates an appropriately sized S2D partition before shipping the computer to you. Use the Suspend-to-Disk utility to
remove the file, to increase the size of the file, or to add the S2D file if you removed it. For more information about altering or creating an
S2D file, see the readme.S2D file, which can be found in the Dell Utilities folder on your hard drive or on the Drivers and Utilities CD
that came with your computer.
