Installation:

The feedthrough is UHV clean and can be installed directly from the crate. As usual, care should be exercised to protect the flange knife-edge. The standard unit
mounts to a 2.75” OD flange (other flanges are available as required).
These units are designed for horizontal or near horizontal applications. Depending on the specific application, and options selected, they may be used in all ori-
entations. Consult the factory for specific considerations.

Auxiliary tube end support is needed for the feedthroughs. This is especially true on models with strokes greater than 24”. A 3/8-24 blind-threaded hole is sup-
plied at the end of the vacuum tube for this purpose. This support will need to be removed to allow removal of the magnet assembly prior to bakeout. If this sup-
port is not provided, the stainless steel tube may warp over time, depending upon cantilever load, bakeouts, etc. This may cause rough motion or binding.

Proper tightening technique should be observed whenever tightening a metal sealed flange. We recommend a small quantity of high temperature anti-seize
lubricant be used on all mounting bolts. This is especially important if the unit will be subject to bakeouts.

Operation:

The MLR/MLRC rotary linear feedthrough will provide high rotary torque with excellent rotary position compliance. Care must be exercised by the user so as not
to inadvertently damage delicate transfer systems. The operator can easily exert over 100 oz/in torque to the probe.

The linear force is 4 lb, with less linear position compliance. This allows some softness in the linear positioning.

Do not move the external magnet assembly suddenly or quickly. The internal probe assembly inertia may cause the assembly to de-couple. Sudden de-coupling
or re-coupling may allow the probe assembly to suddenly move. Such action may cause damage to itself or other equipment.
On the MLR series, small side to side play or runout of the extended probe may be observed. This is normal. The probe assembly bearing “car” has approximately
0.004” clearance to the inside of the vacuum tube. This may be noticed more on longer stroke units with the probe extended. The MLRC series utilizes an outer
support tube and ball bearing to guide the rotary shaft for smooth rotation and no over-top-dead-center jumping.

Do not extend the probe further than specified. Do not move the travel stops or remove stop collars to gain greater travel. This will increase the force on the bear-
ing assemblies and reduce the life of the components.

Adjustments:

The MLR/MLRC series have no field adjustments. Please consult the factory if any problems occur.

Lubrication:

All bearings are dry-lubricated with tungsten disulfide coating. No further lubrication is required.
