2 . Make sur e that your modem is ini ti al ized cor rect ly. Your modem may have been ini ti al ized to not di spl ay responses. You may fact or y- reset the modem by issui ng AT&F and pr ess ENTER. The fact or y def aul t al lows the modem to di spl ay responses af ter a command has been execut ed.

1 . Make sur e the modem is connect ed to a wor ki ng phone li ne. Repl ace the modem wi th a wor ki ng phone to ensur e that the phone li ne is wor ki ng.
2 . Make sure the phone li ne is connect ed to the jack marked “LI NE. ” Incorr ect connect ion prevent s the modem from operat ing properl y. Ref er to Sect ion 2. 3 for modem connect ion inst ruct ions.
Modem di al s but does not connect .
1 . Make sur e the IRQ set ti ng is ident ical on bot h the modem and the sof twar e. Modem and sof twar e must be conf igur ed ident ical ly.
2 . Make sure the phone li ne is worki ng properl y. Repl ace the modem wi th a regul ar phone and di al the number. If the li ne sounds noi sy, you may have di ff icul ty connect ing to the remot e devi ce.
Modem makes a connect ion but no dat a appear s on your scr een.
1 . Make sure the corr ect dat a format (dat a bi ts, st op bi ts, and pari ty bi ts) and fl ow cont rol (RTS/ CTS) are bei ng used.
2 . Make sur e the cor rect ter mi nal emul at ion mode is bei ng used (see communi cat ion sof twar e manual ).
Hi gh pi tch tone is hear d whenever you answer the phone.
1 . Make sur e Aut o- Answer is tur ned of f. Your modem is fact or y conf igur ed to NOT aut o- answer . Issue AT&F to fact or y reset your modem.

2 . Make sur e the remot e syst em and your modem use the same communi cat ion par amet er s (speed, par it y, et c. ).
3 . Make sur e RTS/ CTS har dwar e fl ow cont rol is enabl ed and XON/ XOFF sof twar e fl ow cont rol is di sabl ed in the communi cat ion sof twar e.
4 . Make sur e the dat a speed is not fast er than your comput er 's capabi li ty. Most IBM compat ibl es ar e capabl e of 19, 200 bps under DOS and Wi ndows 3. X. Oper at ing at hi gher speeds under Wi ndows requi res a 486 or fast er CPU or Wi ndows 95.

1 . Make sure Cal l Wai ti ng is turned of f.
2. Make sure the phone line does not exhibit excess
noise.
