B (Shutter-Priority Auto) Mode

Set the shutter speed and shoot pictures.

Rotate the mode dial to B.

Rotate the command dial to choose
the shutter speed value between
1/2,000 s and 8 s.

Focus and shoot.

Camera automatically selects the focus area (one of

nine) containing the subject closest to the camera
(

A144).

Notes on

B (Shutter-Priority Auto) Mode

If the selected shutter speed would result in the picture being over- or underexposed, the shutter

speed display will flash when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway. Choose another shutter
speed and try again.

At speeds slower than 1/4 s, the shutter speed indicator will turn red to show that noise is in the

image. Setting Noise reduction to On (

A148) is recommended to reduce “noise” in the form of

randomly-spaced, brightly colored dots.

Note on Shutter Speed

Shutter speed is restricted to a maximum of 1/2 s when Continuous, BSS, Continuous flash and
Multi-shot 16 are set for Continuous (

A140), or when any mode other than Off is set for Auto

bracketing (

A143).

B

Shutter Speed of 1/2,000 s

A shutter speed of 1/2,000 s is available only when the camera is zoomed out.
