3.6.5 Settings: SSL Overview

Most web sites use a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) which protects data transferred over the internet
using encryption enabled by the server’s SSL Certificate. SSL technology protects your Web site
and makes it easy for customers to trust you. The SSL certificates work with

An SSL Certificate:

enables encryption of sensitive information during online transactions.

contains unique, authenticated information about the certificate owner.

is issued by a Certificate Authority that verifies the identity of the certificate owner.

You need SSL if...

you have an online store or accept online orders and credit cards.

your business partners log in to confidential information on an extranet.

you have offices that share confidential information over an intranet.

you process sensitive data such as address, birth date, license, or ID numbers.

you need to comply with privacy and security requirements.

you value privacy and expect others to trust you.

An SSL Certificate contains a public key and a private key. A public key is used to encrypt
information, and a private key is used to decipher it. When a browser points to a secured domain,
an SSL “handshake” authenticates the server and the client and establishes an encryption method
and a unique session key. They can begin a secure communication session that guarantees
message privacy and integrity.

This section of

allows you to install your own SSL certificate to protect transmitted

documents on your site to ensure that your proprietary data is kept secret from unauthorized users.

The Settings > SSL menu gives you the option of creating either:

(1) your own Self Signed Certificate
(2) a Certificate Signing Request (CSR), which uses official backing of a trusted 3rd party

certifier, such as VeriSign, at a cost to you.

Printgroove

ships with a Self Signed Certificate associated with the hostname or IP address you

provided at the time of your order with Konica Minolta. The figure below shows a sample SSL
Settings screen with both types of certificate listed.
