5.13.1

Replacing the CO

2

adsorption cartridge

Maintenance interval

The CO

2

adsorption cartridge (6.2837.000) loses capacity over time. In

addition, it can become slightly clogged due to too much liquid. It has to
be replaced regularly about every 6 months.

Capacity loss
The adsorption capacity of the CO

2

adsorption cartridge is limited and

decreases over time. This is indicated by an increasing baseline (since more
CO

2

gets to the detector). The CO

2

adsorption cartridge has to be

replaced once the adsorption capacity is depleted. CO

2

adsorption car-

tridges are available under order number 6.2837.000.

Blockage
If the CO

2

adsorption cartridge is blocked by moisture, this is indicated by

a color change in the cartridge material (the orange part becomes color-
less). Since a blocked cartridge allows less air through, the vacuum in the
degassing cell is also weaker and the CO

2

has a more difficult time diffus-

ing out of the eluent.

To protect the CO

2

adsorption cartridge from becoming blocked and to

increase its service life, we recommend installing and regularly regenerat-
ing an additional H

2

O adsorption cartridge.

5.13.2

Regenerating the H

2

O adsorption cartridge

The H

2

O adsorption cartridge protects the CO

2

adsorption cartridge from

moisture; in other words, it adsorbs moisture from the surrounding air.
The lifetime of the H

2

O adsorption cartridge depends on the moisture

content of the surrounding air. The color of the adsorber material changes
once the capacity of the H

2

O adsorption cartridge starts decreasing (e.g.

from orange to colorless for Sigma-Aldrich Art. No. 94098). The H

2

O

adsorption cartridge has to be regenerated (see leaflet) before the color of
all of the adsorber material has changed.

2

O adsorption cartridge

Also see the information in the leaflet for the H

2

O adsorption cartridge.

1 Replacing the adsorber material

Remove the depleted absorber material from the cartridge.

Fill the cartridge with fresh adsorber material. Cover it with cot-
ton.
