Flow diagram

Figure 2 Flow diagram with dialysis and Figure 3 Flow diagram with
ultrafiltration
show the flow paths for two with the 2.850.1030 perform-
able inline sample preparation technologies. The arrangement of the mod-
ules in the diagram corresponds to the front view of the instrument. Liq-
uid containers (eluent bottle, sample vessel, waste container, auxiliary sol-
utions container) and guard column (see Chapter 2.19, page 56) are not
shown in the diagram. Which pressure screws, connections and couplings
are used, is described in the installation chapters of the individual mod-
ules.

Dialysis
This inline sample preparation technology is applied for samples with
strong matrices, e. g. emulsions, samples containing fat and protein, body
fluids or heavily contaminated waste waters. The dialysis effectively
removes particles and colloids, thus preventing damage to the separation
column.

The driving force in dialysis is diffusion. Only ions can pass through the
dialysis membrane. In contrast to filtration, the membrane also holds back
other substances during dialysis, e. g. drops of oil, thus protecting the sep-
aration column against them.
