C . Touch one end of the battery

cable to the solenoid term inal that

is m arked “B ” in S ketch 6-66 or

6-67.

D . B R iEFLY touch the other end

of the cable to the solenoid ter-

m inai that is m arked “A ” in S ketch

6-66 or 6-67. This brief touch w ill

likely cause a spark and should

also energize the starter m otor.

E .

If the starter m otor turns over,

it m eans that the starter m otor is

w orking, if there w as a spark, but

the starter m otor didn’t turn over,

then the starter m otor m ay be at

fault. C all our Technical S ervice

D epartm ent for further advice.

4. Check for faulty wire

harness and key switch

A . If you haven’t done so already,

reinstall the negative (-) battery

2-C of these instructions. Then

use the insulated #10 w ire as your

jum per w ire in the follow ing steps.

B . M ake sure that the W heeis/

Tines/P TO D rive Lever is in

“N EU TR A L”.

C . U nplug the w ire harness recep­

tacle from the back of the key

sw itch (Photo 6-68). C lean any cor­

rosion out of the five sockets on

the receptacle. N ext clean any cor­

rosion off the tabs on the back of

the key sw itch. R econnect the re­

ceptacle to the key sw itch and try

to start the engine w ith the key. If

it starts, you have corrected the

problem . If it doesn’t start, pro­

ceed to the follow ing steps.

D . Insert the ends of the #10

jum per w ire into the tw o sockets

on the receptacle that have thè

red w ires going to them (P hoto

6-69). If the starter m otor turns

over w hen you do this, then the

problem is w ith the key sw itch. If

it doesn’t turn over, then the pro­

blem could be a faulty w ire

harness or a faulty key sw itch.

E . To test the key sw itch and the

w ire harness, you w ill need a con­

tinuity tester. If you don’t have

one, you can m ake one from tw o

“D ” cell flashlight batteries, a

flashlight bulb, som e w ire and

som e tape. R efer to Figure 6-70 to

see how to m ake one.

F. To test the w iring harness:

(a) U nplug the receptacle from the

back of the key sw itch.

(b) D isconnect the negative (-)

battery cable from the ground­

ing screw on the right side of

the battery bracket and bend

the cable term inal safely aw ay

from any m etal parts.

(c) Test each of the tw o red w ires

for continuity by placing the

ends of the continuity tester

w ires at both ends of a single

w ire (see Figure 6-70). If the

lam p lights, electricity is flow ­

ing through the w ire and it is

okay. R epeat this step for the

other red w ire. Let us know if a

w ire doesn’t light the bulb.

(d) A fter testing both red w ires,

reconnect the negative (-)

battery cable to the grounding

screw on the battery bracket.

G . If the red w ires in the w iring

harness are okay, you m ay have

either a faulty keysw itch or a bad

ground. C all our Technical S ervice

D epartm ent for further advice.
