The shelf management system consists of several major components:

Distributed intelligent platform management controllers (IPMCs) which manage and
monitor the operation and environment conditions of each field replaceable unit (FRU) in
the shelf

Shelf manager which implements a system management interface and contains shelf
management controller (ShMC) through which it communicates with other IPMCs

Intelligent platform management interface (IPMI) infrastructure that provides
communication, management, and control paths among the distributed controllers and
to the shelf manager. The IPMI infrastructure is fully compliant to the IPMI V.1.5 and
AdvancedTCA Specification.

The shelf manager is the active instance of the software running on the ATCA-MF105.

For a detailed description refer to the ATCA-MF105 Installation and Use guide. For a description
of the HPI-B software refer to the System Management Interface Based on HPI-B (Centellis CO
31kX/4100/2000) User’s Guide
.

Due to high availability software, utilizing redundant hardware components, system high
availability is ensured. Shelf management software runs on two redundant MF105 boards.
Software upgrade can be performed via a remote interface.

The shelf manager performs the following main tasks:

Retrieving FRU inventory information

Receiving events from sensors of the shelf

Monitoring and controlling the temperature of the shelf

Reporting of errors

Executing corrective actions

Managing interconnect resources in order to prevent damage of the blades due to hot
swap
