SHARK™ IAD User's Guide

CO

Central Office. Typically, a local telephone company facility responsible for connecting all lines
in an area.

COMPRESSION

Operation performed on a data set that reduces its size to improve storage or transmission rate.

CPE

Customer Premises Equipment. Terminating equipment such as terminals, telephones and
modems that connects a customer site to the telephone company network.

CROSSOVER CABLE

Cable that lets you connect one Ethernet hub to another Ethernet hub. You can order an Ethernet
crossover cable from network supply companies such as Black Box. The following table
illustrates how to make your own Ethernet crossover cable.

CSU

Channel Service Unit. A CSU terminates a T1 digital circuit at the customer site. The CSU
performs certain line-conditioning functions, ensures network compliance with FCC rules, and
responds to loopback commands. The CSU also ensures proper ones density in transmitted bit
stream and performs bipolar-violation correction.

CSU/DSU

Channel Service Unit/Data Service Unit. Device responsible for connecting a digital circuit, such
as a T1 link, with a terminal or data communications device.

CTS

Clear to Send. Circuit activated in hardware flow control when a modem (or other DCE) is ready
to accept data from the computer (or other DTE). Compare RTS, xon/xoff.

- D -

D4

A framing format that uses a 12-bit pattern repeating sequence for the location of the framing
bits. Also referred to as Superframe (SF) format.

DATA BITS

Number of bits used to make up a character.

DATAGRAM

Logical grouping of information sent as a network-layer unit. Compare frame, packet.

D

B

Decibel, a unit of measure of relative power, expressed as the ratio of two values. dB = 10 log
P1/P2, where P1 and P2 are the power levels in watts.

DCE

Data Communication Equipment. Device that connects the communication circuit to the network
end. A modem and a CSU/DSU are examples of a DCE.

DEDICATED LINE

Communication circuit that is used exclusively to connect two network devices. Compare dial on
demand.

D

ELAY

D

IAL

A type of trunk signaling for incoming and outgoing calls. With this signaling, the XSP - 100
sends an off-hook pulse until it is ready to receive digits.

DHCP

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. Acting as a DHCP server, the XSP - 100 dynamically
assigns IP addresses and other configuration parameters needed by PCs or workstations to
