Appendix: 10-15

T

IP

One conductor of a telephone wire pair, designated by T.

T

IP

S

TATUS

Transmission state of an unconfigured channel. In the Channel-bank menu the tip status is either
busy or idle.

TR08

A Bellcore standard describing a digital interface between the SLC-96 digital loop carrier system
and a local digital switch.

T

RUNK

A transmission channel connecting two switching devices.

T

RUNK

S

IGNALING

The handshaking used to communicate on a trunk such as loop start and ground start.

TWISTED PAIR

Cable consisting of two copper strands twisted around each other. The twisting provides
protection against electromagnetic interference.

- U -

UDP

User Datagram Protocol. A simple, datagram-oriented transport-layer protocol. A TCP/IP
protocol describing how messages reach applications programs within a destination computer.
This protocol is normally bundled with IP layer software. UDP is a transport layer,
connectionless mode protocol, providing a (potentially unreliable, unsequenced, and /or
duplicated) datagram mode of communication for delivery of packets to a remote or local user.

UTP

Unshielded twisted pair cable.

- V -

VC

Virtual circuit. Network facilities that give the appearance to the user of an actual end-to-end
circuit. A communications link set up on a per-call basis of either voice or data that appears to
the user to be a dedicated point to point circuit.

VCC

Virtual circuit connection. Same as permanent virtual connection (PVC).

VCI

Virtual circuit identifier. A unique numerical tag, defined by a 16 bit field in the ATM cell
header, that identifies a VC over which a stream of cells is to travel during the course of a
particular session between devices.

VC-

MUX

Virtual circuit multiplexing. Encapsulation method that performs multiplexing of higher-layer
protocols using ATM virtual circuits.

VJ

Van Jacobson. Abbreviation for a compression standard documented in RFC 1144.

VP

Virtual path.
