Appendix A A9

Within this report it was found that 136,653 buildings are owned by a com-

bination of private organizations, individuals, nonprofi t organizations, and the
federal government and can be classifi ed as commercial or industrial.

A.5.2.2 Archetype Divisions

A limitation to the data available is that a maximum of two archetypes are
available for the portfolio of buildings. Therefore, to illustrate how different
building sets can be analyzed using similar strategies, the archetypes used in
the small portfolio example will be used here (only natural gas buildings were
considered):

Age:

pre-1960, 1960–1980, post-1980

Size (total): < 1,000 m

2

, 1,000–5,000 m

2

, > 5000 m

2

Using the data available in the tables, the information in Table A2 was ob-

tained.

This use of archetypes demonstrates how a large number of buildings can

be characterized by a small number of archetypes.

A.5.2.3 Building Selection

Although the building numbers are much greater in this example, the same
strategy for the selection of those to focus on applies. By comparing the aver-
age EUI with that of each archetype, the building ages and sizes with the great-
est potential for improvement can be singled out.

For natural gas, the following archetypes are chosen:

Pre-1960 + < 1,000 m

1.

2

1960–1980 + < 1,000 m

2.

2

Post-1980 + < 1,000 m
