Chapter 7. Troubleshooting and diagnostics

This chapter provides information about basic troubleshooting and diagnostic methods to help you solve
problems that might occur in the server. If your server problem is not described here, see “Help and service”
on page 94
for additional troubleshooting resources.

Basic troubleshooting

The following tables provide information to help you troubleshoot your server problems.

Note: If you cannot correct the problem, have the server serviced. For a list of service and support telephone
numbers, refer to the Warranty and Support Information document at:

General problems

The following table describes the general problems and suggested actions to correct detected problems.

Symptom

Action

The server does not start when
you press the power switch.

Verify that:

• The power cord is correctly connected to the rear of the server and to a working

electrical outlet.

• If your server has a secondary power switch on the rear of the server, make sure

that it is switched on.

• The power indicator on the front of the server is on.

• The server voltage matches the voltage available at the electrical outlet for your

country or region.

The monitor screen is blank.

Verify that:

• The monitor signal cable is correctly connected to the monitor and to the

appropriate monitor connector on the server.

• The monitor power cord is correctly connected to the monitor and to a working

electrical outlet.

• The monitor is turned on and the brightness and contrast controls are set

correctly.

• The server voltage matches the voltage available at the electrical outlet for your

country or region.

• If your server has two monitor connectors, be sure to use the connector on

the graphics card.

The operating system does not
start.

Verify that:

• The startup sequence includes the device where the operating system resides.

Usually, the operating system is on the hard disk drive. For more information,
see “Selecting a startup device” on page 75.

The server beeps multiple times
before the operating system
starts.

Verify that no keys are stuck.

Troubleshooting tables

Use the troubleshooting tables to find solutions to problems that have identifiable symptoms.
