4.2 External Modem Configuration, continued
Configuring the modem to work with CFR
The CFR uses a three wire interface (RX, TX, and GND) to communicate
with the modem; no other hardware handshaking lines are used. The modem must
be configured correctly to work with the CFR. To configure the modem, set the
modem DIP switches as explained below:
NOTE: Do not enable auto answer using DIP switches. CFR sends an AT command
to control the auto answer mode (either “ATS0=1” or “ATS0=0”).
The modem initialization string is a set of commands that CFR sends to the
modem to initialize it. For a USRobotics or compatible modem, include the following
AT commands in the initialization string:
X4 Extended set of result codes
Q0 Result codes are displayed
V1 Display verbal (words not numbers) result codes
&H0 Disable transmit data flow control
(neither hardware “CTS” nor software “XON/XOFF” flow control)
&R1 Disable hardware receive data flow control
(set modem to ignore RTS and send data all the times)
&I0 Disable software data flow control (no XON/XOFF flow control)
&B1 Set the RS–232 serial port rate to fixed
(set modem to detect the AT command baud rate and maintain it)
The first three commands are supported by all Hayes compatible modems;
however, the last four commands belong to an extended set of Hayes commands
which are supported by USRobotics and some other manufacturers. Therefore, for
USRobotics Sportster family of modems, the proper initialization string is (CFR default
setting):

for other modems that do not support the extended set of Hayes commands you
should compile an equivalent command. However, in most cases, using the following
simplified initialization string results in satisfactory operation:

NOTE: Do not include the auto answer command in the initialization string. CFR sends
an AT command to control the auto answer mode (either “ATS0=1” or “ATS0=0”).
