Introduction

The PASCO Polarizing Sheets are synthetic linear
polarizing filters that possess special properties for
selectively absorbing light vibrations in certain planes.
When unpolarized light which is a complex mixture of
vibrations lying in all possible directions transverse to
the line of travel is passed through a linear polarizer,
its vibrations become confined to a single linear plane
and the light is considered "polarized" (See Figure 1).
This linearly polarized light can be modified to sup-
press unwanted reflections and to eliminate glare for a
variety of applications.

These neutral linear polarizers represent the best
balance between transmission and extinction for
general use. Extinction transmission is approximately
.005%. Typical applications include variable density
filter systems, photoelastic stress analysis and other
applications where light modulation is necessary. By
using two polarizing sheets, experiments with parallel
and crossed transmittance can be performed (see
Figure 2).
