Description

Cause/Remedy

DMI 1.X or 2.X devices that
report N/A in the Identity and
“Reports” Property page.

This is due to only having the DMI service layer, and not DMI instrumentation software
installed.

Install the latest HP Toptools for Desktops agent or other DMI client software.

Some devices do not display
‘all’ Property pages or
actions.

The number and type of actions, and the property pages displayed are dependent on
the type of device that is selected, whether or not it is an HP product, and which type
(protocol) and version of agent is installed. New HP Kayak personal computers will
typically have all available actions enabled with all Kayak property pages displayed and
populated.

A router from another vendor that only supports SNMP may have a few generic Toptools
actions and the two generic SNMP property pages displayed.

In some cases, if Toptools is not able to connect to the device’s agent to obtain
information dynamically, a limited set of information may be displayed which is obtained
from the last inventory collection data stored within MEDS.

In addition, when multiple devices are selected, Toptools will display the ‘lowest
common denominator’ of actions supported by all selected devices. That is, each device
selected must support the action in order for it to be enabled within the menu.

The "Actions" menu will close
if you drag the mouse on the
cascading "Security" menu
enabled for HP personal
computers.

This is an AFC defect. Click on "Security" within the menu to bring up the cascade menu
and then make your selection.

Set SNMP Passwords
(Communities) for SNMP
devices does not change the
community on the device.

This dialog stores (sets) the SNMP communities within the Toptools database to be
used by MEDS during discovery or when obtaining information from a device.

To change the SNMP community strings on a managed SNMP device, go to the
device’s operating system, such as telnet session or using an operating system tool like
the Windows NT Network Properties dialog.

Data is not always updated
when you visit a page.

Make sure to set your browser to check for newer versions of stored pages on every visit
to the page (Internet Properties, General tab, Settings button).

Netscape crashes periodically
running Toptools. An error
message is displayed stating

"An application error has
occurred and an application
error log is being generated.

Netscape.exe Exception:
access violation …"

The Netscape Java JIT compiler fails occasionally. This compiler is not required for
Toptools. If you experience this condition you can disable the Java JIT compiler to
eliminate the problem.

To disable the JIT compiler on Netscape:

1. If you wish to retain the JIT library for possible future use rename it to a different
name (on Windows, the JIT is named "jit3240.dll" and is located in the directory
>Netscape Directory<\Program\Java\Bin.) If you do not need to retain the library file you
can simply delete it.

2. Shut down all copies of your Communicator.

3. Start one copy of your Communicator.

4. Open a Java Console to verify that the JIT compiler is now disabled. (The JIT
compiler displays a message in the Java Console if it is active.)

5. If the JIT is still active, you may need to reboot your system.
