1 Overview of HP StorageWorks

XP Business Copy Software

Business Copy

The Business Copy feature enables you to maintain storage system-internal copies of all user data on

the HP storage system for purposes such as data backup or duplication. The RAID-protected duplicate

volumes are created within the same storage system as the primary volume (P-VOL). Business Copy is

used for UNIX-based and PC server data. Business Copy can provide up to nine secondary volumes

(S-VOLs) or duplicates of one primary volume. Business Copy is a key component of HP’s solutions

and service offerings.
This document describes and provides instructions for performing Business Copy operations using the

HP StorageWorks XP Remote Web Console. The licensed Business Copy software on the Remote Web

Console displays the Business Copy information and allows you to perform Business Copy operations.

The Remote Web Console can be attached to several storage systems via the storage system TCP/IP

local-area network (LAN). The Remote Web Console communicates and exchanges data directly with the

service processor (SVP) of each attached storage system. For further information on the Remote Web

Console and software, see the HP StorageWorks XP24000 Remote Web Console User’s Guide.
Business Copy operations are nondisruptive and allow the primary (main) volume of each volume pair to

remain online to all hosts for both read and write I/O operations. Once established, Business Copy

operations continue unattended to provide asynchronous internal data backup. Usability is further

enhanced through a resynchronization capability that reduces data duplication requirements and backup

time, thereby increasing user productivity. Business Copy also supports reverse resynchronization

for maximum flexibility.
The licensed Remote Web Console software allows you to configure the Business Copy option on the

storage system. The Remote Web Console software communicates directly with the storage system via a

LAN. For further information on the Remote Web Console software, see the HP StorageWorks XP24000

Remote Web Console User’s Guide.
Business Copy operations can be performed in conjunction with HP StorageWorks XP Continuous Access

Software operations (see

Continuous Access

” on page 12) to provide additional remote copies of

Business Copy volumes. Business Copy also supports the Open Volume Management Virtual LVI/LUN and

Cache Residency Manager features of the storage system, ensuring that all user data can be duplicated

by Business Copy operations. See

Interoperability with Other Products and Functions

” on page 29 for

further information on combining Business Copy with these and other data management features.
Business Copy operations can also be performed in conjunction with HP StorageWorks External Storage

Software operations to create pairs with the external volumes. For the details regarding the external

volumes, see the HP StorageWorks XP24000 External Storage Software User’s Guide.
Business Copy operations can also be performed from the UNIX and/or PC-server host using the HP

StorageWorks XP RAID Manager software. For information and instructions on using RAID Manager to

perform Business Copy (or Continuous Access) operations, see the HP StorageWorks XP RAID Manager

User’s Guide.

Note:

This document does not cover ShadowImage for Mainframe operations. For information

and instructions on performing ShadowImage for Mainframe operations, see the Hitachi

ShadowImage for z/OS User’s Guide.

The use of Business Copy, Business Copy software, and all other HP products is governed by

the terms of your license agreements with HP.
