Purpose

Procedure

To safely assist a patient to exit the Posey Bed for toileting or other reasons.

DO NOt use a patient lift unless previously tested. This will ensure there is enough clearance

under the canopy frame to transfer the patient safely without damaging the canopy.

During patient care and transfers, lock all four (

4) casters.

NOte: Additional persons may be needed for a safe transfer.

1. Access the patient.

NOte: Bed should be in the lowest

position.

2. Assist patient to an upright position.

NOte: Be aware that a reclined

patient may have equilibrium

problems when arising – support as

needed.

3. Help patient out of the bed.

Continue to talk gently to the patient to

reassure them.

a. Speak gently to ensure they are comfortable

and secure.

b. Check that they are a safe distance from the

panel.

c. Make sure area around the bed is clear of any

tripping hazards.

d. Position bed to the lowest position.

e. Put mattress in the flat position.

f. Ensure perimeter guard is down.

g. Unclip the Quick-Release Buckle.

h. Unzip ‘U’ side panel and secure to the top of

the canopy with hook and loop tabs.

i. Detach tubes as needed.

a. Help patient slide both legs to the side of

the bed.

b. Modify as needed depending on patient’s

needs.

c. Consider gait belts / transfer belts to assist

with patient transfer.
