Operation

Figure 2-2. Button-end Specimen Installation (Upper Grip)

WARNING

Placing hands in the crush zone between the Grip faces
with hydraulic pressure applied and the actuator moving is
dangerous.

This can result in injury to personnel and damaging forces
being applied to the specimen.

Keep hands out of the crush zone while performing the following steps.

13.

Adjust the position of the actuator or crosshead until the
specimen just contacts the upper grip base.

14.

Remove system hydraulic pressure.

15.

Slide the collar and adapter up the specimen until the adapter
is positioned over the button-end of the specimen and fully
into the upper grip base pilot.

16.

Install the socket head cap screws finger tight.

17.

Tighten all the cap screws on both grips to 10% of the torque
specified in Table 2-1 in the order shown in Figure 2-3.

Measure the gap between the collar and the grip base to ensure
it is equal all the way around. Tighten and loosen cap screws
as necessary to achieve an equal measurement.

18.

Continue tightening the cap screws in 10% increments. Re-
measure the collar-to-grip base gap between each increment.
