Mounting the Grips

The following steps apply where the grip is mounted to an MTS load
unit or actuator using a threaded connector stud. Contact MTS Systems
Corporation for other than stud mounting configurations.

The following materials and equipment are required for installation:

2 sets of spiral washers,

2 connector studs,

a quantity of Molykote

®

G-n (part number 110102-07) lubricant

(included in the seal kit).

For larger grips 2 people should perform the installation

Mounting the Grip consists of attaching each Grip base to a member of
the force train (the load unit crosshead or a force transducer, or the
end of the actuator piston rod) with a threaded stud. Figure 3-1
illustrates a typical mounting configuration. The spiral washers
installed between each Grip and the mating member of the force train
are used to preload the connector stud.

The Grip collars and adapters can be removed, if desired, to reduce
grip weight and make them easier to handle.

WARNING

Sudden actuator movement may result if system hydraulic
pressure is applied while the dc error (command =
feedback) is other than zero.

This may cause injury to personnel and/or damage to
e q u i p m e n t .

Zero the dc error before applying system hydraulic pressure.

1.

Adjust the system controller for zero dc error and apply system
hydraulic pressure according to applicable system procedures.

2.

Lower the actuator and raise the crosshead, as necessary, to
allow adequate room to install the grips.

3.

Remove system hydraulic pressure. Ensure all residual
pressure (e.g. service manifold accumulator pressure) has been
reduced to zero.

4.

Remove the grip collar and adapter from each grip.
