1

Introduction

The AutoMax

Universal Drive Controller (UDC) module is used for Distributed

Power drive control applications. The Distributed Power System (DPS) is a
programmable microprocessor-based control system that is capable of real-time
control of AC and DC drives. The UDC module plugs into the backplane of an
AutoMax rack and is used to control one or two drives. Both AC and DC drives can be
controlled from one UDC module. Up to 10 UDC modules can be mounted in an
AutoMax rack permitting control of up to 20 drives from a single rack.

The UDC module communicates with the AutoMax Processor module(s) in the rack
via the Multibus

backplane and with up to two Power Module Interfaces (PMIs) via

separate fiber-optic communication links. Refer to figure 1.1. The PMI, located at the
Power Module, executes the control algorithm and transmits diagnostic and I/O data to
the UDC module over the fiber-optic link. The control type (current, vector, brushless,
etc.) is determined by the operating system contained in the PMI.

The UDC module contains non-volatile flash memory to store the operating systems
for the UDC module and the PMIs, the drive configuration information, and the UDC
tasks (one for each drive). The UDC module runs the outer control loop task and
sends real time control information to the PMI over the fiber-optic link. The UDC
module also contains dual port memory which is used as a storage buffer for
exchanging data with the AutoMax Processor module(s) in the AutoMax rack.

This manual describes the functions and specifications of the UDC module as well as
installation procedures. Unless specifically noted otherwise, the information in this
manual applies to both B/M O-57552 and B/M O-57652. For information about DPS
application programming and a description of the registers in the UDC module’s dual
port memory, see the appropriate Configuration and Programming instruction manual.
