but not into “SLOW” wheel gear.

C onnecting rod at end of lever m ight be

backw ards, or bent in tow ard transm ission hous­

ing and hitting it. O ther shifting linkage m ight be

bent. Straighten or replace linkage. S ee P hoto

C lutch inside transm ission m ay be binding.

C. Lever moves freely, but won’t
shift in or out of gear.

e E ccentric shifting pin inside transm ission m ay

be broken (rare) or w orn. D isconnect linkage

from eccentric lever and try m oving eccentric

lever by hand. S ee Photo 7-1. If lever m oves

easily, contact Technical Service D epartm ent.

C heck condition and adjustm ent of drive belt

and reverse disc. S ee S ection 6.

M ounting bolt for transm ission drive pulley

m ay be loose. (S ee P hoto 6-1 on page 37). If so,

drive belt or reverse disc w ill turn pulley, but

pulley w on’t turn m ain drive shaft.

W orm gears that drive w heel and tiller shafts

m ay be w orn.

4. WHEELS TURN, BUT TINES WON’T

Tines/P TO C lutch Lever m ust be in

“E N G A G E ” position. S ee Section 3.

Tines/P TO C lutch Lever m ay need adjusting.

K ey for “dog” clutch on tine attachm ent m ain

drive shaft m ay be m issing or broken.

W orm gears that drive tine shaft m ay be

w orn.

K eys that hold tine holders to tine shaft m ay

be m issing or broken. To check, rem ove hold­

ers. S ee S ection 6.

K ey for bronze w orm gear on tine attachm ent

m ain drive shaft m ay be m issing or broken.

5. TINES TURN, BUT WHEELS WON’T

C heck operation of W heel S peed Lever. See

P roblem 2.

H i-P ro key inside w heel clutch m ay be m iss­

ing or broken. If so, clutch w ill not turn w heel

shaft.

“FA S T” and “S LO W ” speed w heel gears m ay

be w orn. If only one gear is w orn, there w ill only

be one w heel speed.

W orm gear that drives pinion shaft and pin­

ion gears m ay be w orn.

“FA S T” and “S LO W ” speed pinion gears m ay

be w orn. If only one gear is w orn, there w ill only

be one w heel speed.

D rive “dogs” on sides of w heel clutch m ay

be w orn or broken. If only one side of clutch is

affected, there w ill only be one w heel speed.

ON TOP OF GROUND, BUT STOP
OR HESITATE IN SOIL

D rive belt m ay be loose. S ee S ection 6.

7. TILLER JUMPS WHILE TILLING

D epth R egulator Lever set too deep for soil

conditions. Low er lever for shallow er setting.

E ngine throttle speed too fast.

Tiller w heel speed too fast for soil conditions.

C hange to “LO W ” belt range or “S LO W ” w heel

speed.

8. DEPTH REGULATOR LEVER
DIFFICULT TO MOVE

Lubricate spring assem bly and depth adjust­

m ent bar. See Section 6.

C heck for bent depth adjustm ent bar.

9. WHEEL AND SHAFT MOVE
OUT TO ONE SIDE

S nap ring on w heel shaft m ay be dislodged

from its groove. R aise w heels off ground and

check for back and forth play in shaft. If there is

play, one or both snap rings are loose.
