Escape Sequence

Another name for printer commands that begin with an escape character.

Ethernet

A linear local area network developed by Xerox, Digital Equipment Corp.,
and Intel in 1976 and now an industry standard.

Factory Default

The printer settings that are programmed into the printer at the factory.
These settings are used unless they are overridden with printer commands
sent through an application, QMS Document Option Commands, or PS
Executive Series Utilities. See also

Fixed Spacing

Uniform horizontal spacing between characters and symbols in a font
composed of characters of uniform width. For example, in fixed spacing an
“i” has the same space allotment as a “w.” Fonts with fixed spacing have a
specific number of characters per inch, or pitch. See also

Folio

A paper size of 8.3" x 13.0" (210 mm x 330 mm).

Font

A complete character set in one typeface and style. See also

typeface family.

Foolscap

A paper size of 8.0" x 13.0" (203 mm x 330 mm).

Graphics

Printing, through special software commands, of graphs, diagrams, or other
pictorial images.

Handshake, Handshaking

A procedure, usually part of a communications protocol, to establish a data
communications path. Devices must be able to communicate with each
other. If you are using serial data transmission, you are using either XON/
XOFF or DTR/DSR protocol to control data flow.
