Assemble Drive Pinion

(*"Slip-fit" outer pinion bearing)

1.

Using appropriate sleeve, press

Stake pilot bearing using staking

tool and press. This is essential to

retain the bearing.

Install bearing cage on drive

pinion.

Press inner bearing cone on

pinion.

IMPORTANT: To prevent bearing

damage, use suitable sleeve that

only contacts inner race of bearing

cone.

7.

Install pinion outer bearing cone.

NOTE:

At this stage in assembly,

check pinion bearing preload de-

scribed in Adjustment Section of

this manual for "slip-fit" outer pinion

bearing.

Rear Axle:

Do not install

oil seal until adjustment is complete.

2.

Press pilot bearing in pinion.

IMPORTANT:

To prevent bearing

damage, use suitable sleeve that

only contacts inner bearing race.

5.

Install bearing spacer on pinion.

NOTE:

When new gear set or pinion

bearings are used, select nominal

size spacer (see chart page 22). If

original parts are used, use spacer

removed during disassembly.

8.

Rear Axle Oil Seal and Yoke:

Installation of these parts is the

same for "slip-fit" and "press-fit"

bearings. See page 52 (step 8 and

9) for instructions.

NOTE:

For "slip-fit" bearings,

pinion may be temporarily removed

to simplify seaI installation.

9. Forward Axle Helical Gear and

Nut:

See page 54 for instructions.
