VST
Plugins
Software-­‐based
instruments
and
effects
have
changed
music
recording
and
production
in
ways
that
would
have
been
unimaginable
only
a
few
years
ago.
Today,
plugin
instruments
and
effects
are
available
in
several
formats,
of
which
these
are
the
most
popular:
● AU
(Audio
Unit)
plugins
run
only
on
Macintosh
computers.
● DX
(DirectX)
plugins
run
only
on
Windows
computers.
● RTAS
(Real
Time
Audio
Suite)
plugins
are
compatible
only
with
Avid
Pro
Tools
software,
which
can
run
either
on
a
Mac
or
on
Windows.
● The
VST
plugin
format
is
supported
on
both
Mac
and
Windows.
The
V-­‐Machine
is
compatible
with
PC/Windows
VST
plugins.
Even
the
Mac
version
of
the
VFX
Software
uses
ONLY
PC/Windows
VST
plugins.
Plugins
always
operate
within
a
host.
Usually
the
host
is
some
type
of
multitrack
digital
audio
workstation
software,
but
your
V-­‐Machine
frees
you
from
the
need
to
use
a
computer
to
play
VST
plugins.
The
type
of
plugin
you’ll
use
always
depends
on
what
type(s)
your
host
is
compatible
with,
and
on
what
type
of
computer
you’re
using.
However,
many
of
the
plugins
that
you
can
buy
(or
download
for
free)
are
available
in
two
or
more
of
these
formats.
Except
for
RTAS
plugins,
which
are
sometimes
available
only
in
the
RTAS
format,
you
can
usually
trust
that
the
plugins
you
purchase
will
include
VST
versions
compatible
with
Microsoft
Windows,
which
means
they’re
able
to
run
on
the
V-­‐Machine.
(VST
plugins
that
only
operate
in
the
Macintosh
can’t
be
used
with
the
V-­‐Machine.)
