Important: The measurements are only an

indication of longĆterm changes. You are not

replacing medical observation or consulĆ

tation. For more detailed information on

the meaning of the body fat content,

body water content as well as bone mass

and muscle mass and the values ideal for

you, please consult your GP.
Tip:
- To obtain comparable measurements, weigh

yourself every day at the same time and

under the same conditions (recommended in

the mornings or three hours after a meal or

sport). The values fluctuate naturally by

approx. 5 % throughout the day.

- When stepping on the scales, ensure that

you touch as many contacts as possible.

- Very dry skin and/or very hard skin may

distort the result. The measurement results

will be more accurate if the soles of the feet

have good blood circulation or are damp.

However, please ensure that the soles of

the feet are not wet.

What does the measured value

reveal about the body water

content?

Water is vital for the body. Water content drops

with increasing age. An adult has an average

total water content of approx. 50-65 %.

The optimum total water content is essential

for your health and helps prevent illnesses.

What is the muscle mass?

This function indicates the calculated mass of

skeletal muscles (approximate value) in your

body. A human being has over 600 muscles.

TheĂmuscles play an important role (movement,

posture) and use energy. With increasing

muscle mass (increase in activity and sport),

more energy and calories are used and the

body fat content is reduced.

Average skeletal muscle mass (International

Commission on Radiological Protection, 1975):
- Women who

weigh 58 kg:

30 %

- Men who

weigh 70 kg:

40 %

What is bone mass?

This function indicates the calculated bone

mass (approximate value for bone mineral

content). The bone mass is dependent on

life style. Therefore, it is important to have

a healthy diet and to exercise regularly.

Ask a specialist for your ideal values.
Average bone mineral content

(RicoĂet al. 1993):
- Women between

17 and 28 years

of age:

approx. 2.7 kg

- Men between

17 and 28 years

of age:

2.7ć3.5 kg

Note: For the following persons it may not be

possible to calculate the bone mass.

Please use these values as an approximation.
- Elderly people or adolescents
- Women during or after the menopause
- People who are receiving hormone therapy
- Women who are breastĆfeeding
