The VFD displays status of the battery and the charger in two separate fields. In the VFD label
these correspond to ‘Battery Status’ and ‘Charger Status’ respectively. When no battery is detected
the charger status will read ‘RDY’ and the battery status will read ‘EMP’. The battery status display
will change from ‘EMP’ to ‘CHG’ when the battery has been successfully detected and is being
charged. The charger status will read ‘ACT’ when the battery is being charged, discharged or
conditioned. Refer to the Status Codes Section for more details on VFD Status Codes. The
charger is a smart battery charger and will use the information contained within the smart battery to
provide proper charge parameters. Only smart batteries can be charged with this charger. It will not
recognize or charge any battery that is not SMBUS protocol version 1.1 compliant. It is important
that dirt or debris does not obstruct the contacts on the battery, or failure to charge may result.

Once successful communication is established, the charger will automatically poll the battery to
determine its status. If the battery requires and requests a charge the charger will begin charging
briefly to assure charge in the battery. The charger will then briefly discharge the battery (approx. 5
seconds) to assure proper discharge functionality of the battery prior to full charging. Once the
battery has been evaluated successfully on the discharge test, the battery will continue to charge
until fully charged.

Tightly close and secure charger lid, securing the two top latches after batteries begin the charge
cycle. This will assure proper contact between the batteries and the charger. This is especially
important if the charger is mounted on a vehicle and batteries are being charged in transit. Battery
and Charger Status messages are visible through the lid windows when the lid is closed.

If the battery is requesting conditioning and the conditioning override button is in the OFF position,
the batteries will undergo a conditioning cycle. Conditioning requires the battery to be discharged
fully and then charged which can add extensive time to complete a full charge. See the
Conditioning Section for more information.

Recommended charging is with the lid closed and tightly secured.
Failure to do so may not guarantee charger to battery contact
resulting in improper charge cycles.

3.3 Charger Functions

3.3.1 Status Codes

There are several status and error codes reported on the VFD display panel. The main status and error
codes are on a label inside the charger lid for quick review. This label is shown in Fig. 7 for reference.
