5. OPERATION

The Filter Set can be used for frequency analysis only when connected to a
suitable measuring instrument, and both must have power available. This
arrangement will allow any of the sound (or vibration) parameters determined
by the measuring instrument to be analyzed using manual scanning of the
frequency bands.

When the measuring arrangement is also connected to a recording
instrument such as the CEL-160 Graphic Level Recorder or CEL-238
Secondary Processor, frequency scanning can be performed under the
control of the recording instrument, which then records the individual levels in
each band.

Section 5.1 describes how the Filter Set is connected to a measuring
Instrument and prepared for use, while Section 5.2 covers operation.

5.1 Preparation for Use With Other Equipment

Preparation of the instruments is commenced as follows.

1.

Ensure that all instruments are switched OFF.

2.

Fit the microphone and preamplifier to the sound level meter
according to the instructions given in its handbook.

3.

When the sound level meter to be used is one of the CEL-493/2N,
CEL-275/2, or CEL-383/2 series, go to step 4, otherwise proceed to
step 5.

4.

Connect the sound level meter close-coupled to the Filter Set as
shown in Figure 7, by inserting the plug on the top of the Filter Set into
the socket on the bottom of the sound level meter.

The locking screw in the Filter Set is spring loaded to allow the plug to
be inserted fully.
