xSeries 440 Planning and Installation Guide

Known problems with NetWare are:

NetWare 5.1 is currently not supported, but it should still install. See RETAIN
tip H176163 for details on a known shutdown problem:

http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/MIGR-43679.html

With NetWare 6.0, the server may show extreme CPU utilization values (for
example, 13000%). This will be fixed with NetWare 6.0 Support Pack 2. See
RETAIN tip H176060 at:

http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/MIGR-43532.html

The overall process is as follows:

1. Install NetWare and the Gigabit Ethernet driver
2. Apply the latest NetWare Support Pack
3. Install additional drivers
4. Add support for the RXE100
5. Enable Hyper-Threading

You will need the following device drivers:

Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet, from

http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/MIGR-43369.html

Remote Supervisor Adapter, from

http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/MIGR-42317.html

IBM Active PCI driver, from

http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/MIGR-42423.html

A new NetWare Bus Interface driver, NBI.NLM, from

http://support.novell.com/filefinder/

(search for NBIUP1.EXE)

To install NetWare 6 on x440, do the following:

1. Disconnect the RXE-100 if you have one attached. You should reconnect it

after the Support Pack is installed and before the NBI driver is installed.

2. Power on the x440 with bootable NetWare 6 CD in the CD-ROM drive.

3. Follow the NetWare installer screen instructions up to the device driver

screen, shown in Figure 4-10 on page 123. The NetWare installer cannot
detect the Broadcom Gigabit controller.
