transmission dip stick t u b e , using one 3/8 " - 1 6 x 1 / 2 " hex head
bolt and 3 / 8 " split l o c k w a s h e r . It may be n e c e s s a r y to b e n d
the tube slig htl y to f i t . Tube m o u n t s to turbo m o u n t i n g
bracket.

4 9 On E40D (4 SPEED O V E R D R I V E ) A U T O M A T I C MODELS O N L Y , install

t r a n s m i s s i o n d i p s t i c k tube using a cable c lamp retained f r o m
step 1 8 , a 9 0 ° b r a c k e t , a 5/16-18 x 1" hex b o l t , two 1 1 / 1 6
O . D . x 5 / 1 6 I . D . w a s h e r s , and a 5/16-18 Nylock n u t . 9 0 °
bracket mounts under belIhousing-to-engine b o l t . See f i g s . 1 9
and 21 .

5 0 Line up the turbine heat shield and gaskets on the

turbocharger. You may use 5 / 1 6 " s t u d s , pins or bolts with
heads r e m o v e d as guides to ease the i n s t a l l a t i o n .

5 1 Bolt the turbo down-tube to the tu rbo ch arg er, using six

5 / l 6 " - 1 8 x 7 / 8 " stainless steel hex head bolts and 9 / 1 6 " O . D . x
5 / 1 6 " I . D . flat w a s h e r s . Make sure gaskets and heat shield are
properly in p l a c e , and that the heat shield does not touch the
fir ew all . N o t e : Heat shield may be crushed slightly to provide
c l e a r a n c e .

5 2 ON E40D (4 SPEED O V E R D R I V E ) AUTOMATIC MODELS O N L Y , use

hacksaw to rem ov e aproximately 1 / 2 " of the corners of the boss
i n d i c a t e d in f i g - 2 7 . This is necessary for the Y - p i p e
assembly to clear the transmission-bellhousing a r e a .

53 Install exhaust " Y - p i p e " assembly to engine exhaust manifolds

' u n d e r the v e h i c l e . Bolt the extension tube flange to the turbo
m o u n t i n g bracket using two 3/8-24 stainless collet lock nuts and
two 1 3 / 1 6 O . D . x 3/8 I. D. flat w a s h e r s . Leave nuts loose
enough for a l i g n m e n t . Do not install U - c l a m p at this time .

N O T E : ON E40D (4 SPEED O V E R D R I V E ) A U T O M A T I C MODELS O N L Y , u n b o l t the

shift l i n k a g e p i v o t b r a c k e t f r o m the left s i d e of the
t r a n s m i s s i o n to a l l o w the e x t e n s i o n half of t h e Y - p i p e to be
m o u n t e d in p l a c e b e t w e e n the l i n k a g e and the t r a n s m i s s i o n . It is
not n e c e s s a r y to c o m p l e t e l y r e m o v e the l i n k a g e . W h e n the Y -
p i p e a s s e m b l y is in p l a c e , r e i n s t a l l t h e l i n k a g e . See f i g . 27.
