QFP Probing Clip User Guide

The Ironwood QFP probing clip is comprised of three component pieces. Assembly of these three pieces and then the ability
to probe your QFP IC device is relatively easy.

STEP 1 ATTACHING ALIGNMENT BLOCK TO IC

The alignment block is used to attach the QFP probe assembly to the QFP IC. The alignment block also accomplishes precise
alignment of the probe spring pins to the QFP leads
For some applications double-sided tape can be used. However, in most cases, the resultant bond between the alignment block
and QFP IC will be minimal at best.

We recommend using 3M brand DP-110, 2-part epoxy.
a) Mix a small amount of the epoxy on a piece of paper or in a small container.
b) Using a toothpick or similar mixing tool, apply a small amount of the epoxy to the center of the QFP IC. 60% coverage of
the IC is recommended. The epoxy should be between 10 and 20 mils thick.

CAUTION Excess epoxy on the edge of the IC will adhere to the leads and prevent the probe tips from contacting the QFP

leads.

c) Mount the alignment piece (orientation is not critical) onto the IC and allow at least 1 hour to harden. 8 Hrs. is
recommended. An extra alignment block is shipped with each probe. Additional alignment blocks can be purchased through
Ironwood Electronics, Inc.

STEP 2 ATTACHING PROBE ASSEMBLY TO ALIGNMENT BLOCK

a) Carefully place the probe assembly over the top of the alignment block
b) Insert the shoulder screw into the top of the assembly and carefully tighten, the screw will stop when the probe spring pins

are fully compressed.

If necessary, the alignment block can be removed from the top of the IC by applying heat (see epoxy tube or application

guide for details)
